Clashes and calls for change as anti-racism protests spread globally

Anti-racism protests took place around the world on Saturday (June 13), prompted by the killing of George Floyd last month in America. In Britain nationalist demonstrators clashed with police as thousands of people took to the streets. Supporters of Black Lives Matter demonstrated and so did groups branding themselves 'counter demonstrators', some of whom were affiliated with right wing and extreme right wing organisations. They said they wanted to protect statues after acts of vandalism last weekend, but they repeatedly clashed with police throughout the afternoon. There was also tension in the French capital Paris where protests were held by both right wing and anti racism campaigners, while Black Lives Matter supporters turned out in force in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei and the Australian cities of Perth and Darwin. In Perth, indigenous people protested against historic mistreatment and discrimination, much of which they say has not gone away.
