Original Islanders captain Eddie "18" Westfall narrates this feature on the improbable night of January 18, 1973, when the lowly, expansion New York Islanders (4-37-4) shocked the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins (28-10-4), tagging them with a 9-7 loss at Boston Garden. Reportedly, announcers throughout the league chuckled when the score for this game arrived on the wires, thinking it had to be a typo. This was the Isles' first and only win of the season against an Original Six club, and one of the last games coached by the team's first coach, Phil Goyette, who was canned the following week. Following this game, the Bruins promptly lost four of their next five. As for the newborn Isles, this was the highlight of a miserable year that would lead to the hiring of coach Al Arbour, the drafting of Denis Potvin, and better days.
