Software: Beatnik Demo / Beatnik Player / Headspace RMF Sampler Composers: Brian Salter, Paul Sebastien, Johann Sebastian Bach, Thomas Dolby Arranger: Kean Freitas Year: 1997 This is a compilation of tracks from Beatnik Demo (a Mac OS app), Beatnik Player's sample files, and Headspace RMF Sampler. These tracks were used to demonstrate the capabilities of Beatnik. Some notes: These were mostly recorded on miniBAE using the patches111 bank, although some were recorded directly from the Demo app due to synthesis differences between earlier and later versions of BAE. The first eight tracks are the main sample tracks, and appear in all three pieces of software/collections. World, Funk, and Soundtrack were made for and used in WebTV in 1996; they only appear in Beatnik Demo. Jungle was not one of the original sample tracks, but was later added as part of Headspace RMF Sampler. The RMF Sampler versions are largely identical, except with the echoed Beatnik voice appended at the end of them. I have omitted those versions from here. Lounge Lizard is known as Lounge in RMF Sampler; likewise Sound FX Medley is Sfx-Medley. The track was originally named Kat 'n' Mouse and created for Headspace's MIDI library in 1996. I've included three bonus tracks: Beatnik Echo, Hyperactive and Mystical. In addition to the RMF Sampler tracks, these were included as examples in the documentation for the Music Object API, so I felt it'd be nice to include these. 1. 0:00 Sound FX Medley (Brian Salter) - "An example piece which shows off some of the interesting sound effects and non-musical sounds that Beatnik is capable of!" 2. 0:50 House (Paul Sebastien) - "An example House music file, featuring custom vocal samples." / "Paul Sebastien's house-ey file with vocals, written January '97" (internal version) 3. 1:53 Classical (Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Kean Freitas) - "A J.S. Bach piano pice ('Siciliano'), in the RMF format." 4. 3:43 Lounge Lizard / Lounge (Brian Salter) - "An example pseudo-lounge piece, with natural, realistic sounding instruments." 5. 4:45 Ambient (Thomas Dolby, Brian Salter) - "This piece is an ambient, mellow composition with nice chords and melodies." 6. 8:36 Techno (Paul Sebastien) - "This is an example techno-house piece, which starts out techno and then goes into a lush house track." 7. 9:52 Modern Rock (Paul Sebastien) - "An example modern rock piece." 8. 10:50 Trance (Paul Sebastien, Brian Salter) - "A cool trance-techno piece featuring interesting production techniques and effects." 9. 13:46 World (Thomas Dolby) (from WebTV) 10. 14:22 Funk (Thomas Dolby) (from WebTV; arrangement of his song "Airhead") 11. 14:56 Soundtrack (Thomas Dolby) (from WebTV) Bonus tracks: 12. 16:02 Jungle (Brian Salter) - "An example 'lite jungle' piece, featuring custom drum sample loops and interesting production." 13. 20:07 Beatnik Echo (Brian Salter) 14. 20:17 Hyperactive (Thomas Dolby) - "Thomas Dolby's Hyperactive!" 15. 21:17 Mystical (Brian Salter) - "medieval-sounding drones and meandering lines reminiscent of gregorian chant set the theme in this quiet music."
