A gomesi is a traditional, floor-length dress worn by women in Uganda for weddings and other formal events. It is also known as a Busuuti or Bodingi. Here are some characteristics of a gomesi: Shape: Square neckline, short puffed sleeves, and a sash tied around the waist Fabric: Usually made from brightly colored or patterned fabric such as silk, cotton, satin, or polyester Buttons: Two buttons on the left side of the neckline Embroidery: Embroidery at the edge or hem The gomesi is a symbol of respect and dignity. Some in Ugandan society consider not wearing a gomesi to be almost "indecent". However, its popularity has declined, especially among the younger generation. The gomesi's origins can be traced back to the Lubugo outfit, which is the traditional attire of Baganda women. The Lubugo is made from the bark of the Mutuba, a local tropical tree.
