In this video you will learn how to predict the products of a combustion reaction. A combustion reaction is any reaction which combines a reactant with molecular oxygen. Depending on what elements this reactant contains you will get different products. The most important type of compound to undergo combustion reactions are hydrocarboons. That is compounds that contain hydrogen and carbon. When hydrocarbons are combusted the hydrogen forms water and the carbon forms carbon dioxide. This is a general rule, any carbon combusted produces carbon dioxide, any hydrogen combusted produces water. Additionally any sulfur combusted produces sulfur dioxide, and finally the combustion of metals produces metal oxides.
