Gabrielli Ricercar V in C Major

Domenico Gabrielli, a virtuoso cellist/composer working in Bologna, Italy, became the first composer to publish repertoire for the solo cello with his set of seven ricercare from 1689. Bolognese string makers were the first to wrap the lower two strings of the cello in metal, allowing for thinner strings. This made the facile and intricate playing needed for solo cello repertoire possible. Ricercare V in C Major sounds almost like an ode to the C-string—I imagine I can hear Gabrielli reveling in all the new sounds available to his instrument. Performed by Annie Jacobs-Perkins
