Space Launcher is a space-themed arcade game developed and published by Nintendo R&D1 in November 1979. Unlike many contemporary games that were clones of Space Invaders, Space Launcher introduced a unique hybrid of shooting and maneuvering gameplay that predates the mechanics of Frogger by two years. The game requires the player to navigate an unarmed or lightly armed ship through an obstacle-filled space environment to retrieve items from the top of the screen. After grabbing a treasure, the player must safely fly back down to the starting point to deposit it and repeat the process until all items are collected. While primarily a maneuvering game, it includes elements of firing at attacking enemy ships. Experts at Kotaku and Nintendo Wiki note that it was "surprisingly original" compared to Nintendo’s other 1970s titles like Space Fever, which were direct responses to Space Invaders.
