When ¶2549 was ruled an invalid way of allowing unhappy local churches to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church, effectively removing any exit ramp for these churches outside of special circumstances, many met such news with great disapproval and dismay. Indeed, there is much to mourn here as covenant communities are now being forced to choose between the assets they have accrued and cared for in the name of Jesus. Even so, Rev. Dr. Scott Field volunteers a different understanding: leaving could be a great blessing to many communities. In this segment, I think through his proposition theologically and practically.
