Holst was inspired to write this suite in 1911 after he had written several piano accompaniments to the songs in volume III of Ceil Sharp's Folk-Songs from England. That was the 'Hampshire' volume of Sharp's County songs. George Gardiner was a retired Scottish university professor of linguistics, who moved to Hampshire and began what was to become almost the largest collection in the EFDSS, second only to Sharp. Holst used five of Gardiner's collection - the Morris dance Glorishears, and the songs Swansea Town, Claudy Banks, I'll love my love (actually collected in Cornwall), and A Blacksmith Courted Me. As a finale he used two non-Hampshire tunes, Dargason (or Welsh Sedony) and Greensleeves. He expanded this movement in 1914 as part of the St, Paul's Suite for strings.
