The Holy Trinity Revealed in the Baptism of Jesus - Epiphany 2

This Sunday is the second Sunday in Epiphany. In the Gospel lesson from St. Mark, we are shown another way in which Christ is made known to us (manifested to us). But at the Baptism of Jesus, the Father speaks from Heaven, breaking hundreds of years of silence. The Holy Spirit also appears in the form of a dove and descends on Jesus. This important event should not be overlooked as it is also an important passage for us to hold on to as we defend the doctrine of the Holy Trinity against those who deny it. And as the Church has done from the beginning, we recognize God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as the three persons that make up the one God. This provides a fuller picture of who God is and how we are to worship Him. To see God as a Trinity shows us how God exists, how He redeems mankind and how He operates in doing so. It also guides us in how we pray to Him.
