On-demand fishing is transforming the future of commercial fisheries around the world — reducing vertical lines, eliminating surface buoys, and protecting endangered marine species like the North Atlantic right whale from entanglement. SMELTS has pioneered a lineless, on-demand fishing system that replaces traditional endlines with smart, acoustic-controlled technology. Using a wire cage trap equipped with a compressed air cylinder and acoustic valve, fishing gear can be released from the seafloor with a simple acoustic signal — surfacing safely without a single rope in the water. To address the challenge of marking gear without surface buoys, SMELTS and Teledyne have introduced automatic acoustic gear marking that displays gear positions directly on Raymarine Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) — supporting both Teledyne and EdgeTech acoustics on one screen. In collaboration with TEEM.FISH, SMELTS has also developed automatic GPS surface marking using RFID tag technology to track fishing gear from set to haul. Together, these advancements represent the next wave of innovation in sustainable, whale-safe fishing — keeping the oceans productive, connected, and free of entanglement risk. 🎥 In this presentation, SMELTS shares its ongoing progress in: Developing seafloor lifting engines for lineless fishing. Advancing shipboard control and gear tracking technologies. Integrating multi-platform acoustic marking for real-time visibility. 🌐 Learn more: www.SMELTS.org 📍 Presented at the Ropeless Consortium 2025 #OnDemandFishing #RopelessFishing #SMELTS #Teledyne #Raymarine #SustainableFishing #RightWhale #MarineInnovation #OceanTechnology #EdgeTech #Samsara #RFID #AcousticRelease
