Racial Barriers and Religious Boundaries: Assimilation among Second Generation Asian Americans

Carolyn Chen http://www.asianamerican.northwestern..., associate professor of sociology at Northwestern University, discusses the religious patterns of the Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Hindu Asian-American second generation. She finds that, in general, assimilation has a secularizing effect. However, secularization is determined by the strength of racial barriers and religious boundaries a group faces. Muslims and evangelical Protestants stand out as exceptionally religious. This presentation was part of the RICSRE Faculty Seminar Series which features speakers from a wide variety of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, education, law, business, and medicine throughout the academic year.
