You might think Edgar Degas, one of the most famous painters in the world, founder of the Impressionists, and French artist known best for his ballerinas, is an odd choice of suspect for the Jack the Ripper murders! ...I mean, you wouldn't be wrong. Why would the world's most notorious unsolved serial killing be done by someone famous? Someone who didn't even live in the country? Someone who had set up an excellent alibi but wasn't at home? This wasn't my first TikTok about why I keep wondering if Degas was a killer, but it was the first to go viral. I actually posted this video accidentally! It still contained mistakes I normally would have edited out and/or corrected, but because it took off, I didn't take it down. Therefore, I'd like to take time to note that there are two minor errors where I misspoke, and one thing I would have left out if I'd been thinking about it more. Here we go: Corrections and notes: NO, the occipital lobe is not behind the eyes as I said, it’s in the back of the head. I misspoke. YES, there was a train at that time that would take you from Paris to London on one ticket. It was called a boat train, it included the cost of the ferry to cross the English Channel, and assuming no weather disruptions, it took about 7 hours in 1888. That information is correct… BUT if he had done the murders I assume Degas would have stayed overnight, likely for a long stay. He had local friends who were willing to put him up and I believe at least one who knew Whitechapel well. I discuss this at length, with receipts, in Video 26. PLEASE NOTE: Stargardt’s does not make murderers! I apologize if this video gives you that impression. I had made a more in depth video about the Stargardt’s link prior to this one but I should have taken the time in this video to reiterate some basic facts like: a) even TBI doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll become violent and b) we really, even today, don’t understand what it means when a portion of the brain goes dark on a scan for electrical activity. So that portion of the video, while based on published research, is only speculation ...at best. Thank you for your understanding and please enjoy this theory about Jack the Ripper as my research on the subject continues to shed more light on this hypothesis. And if you like reading about this topic: I'm turning this theory into a fiction book, with a detailed appendix referencing which portions of the book were supported by contemporary documents as fact. It remains an excellent piece of historical fiction that focuses on the lives of the victims. https://amzn.to/3AdyASc "Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert" by Patricia Cornwell https://amzn.to/3WNn0pw "Walter Sickert: A Life" by Matthew Sturgis https://amzn.to/3LR4ndZ "The Complete Jack the Ripper" by Donald Rumbelow https://amzn.to/3SBZJ7o
