In 1818 he was preparing for the very special Christmas eve mass when he found that the organ would just not work. Realising he could do nothing else he prayed for inspiration and God brought to mind his poem. But this poem had no music so he made his way to Franz Gruber's house and explained the situation. Although there was just a few hours before the service Franz was able to put together some music and accompanied by a guitar the choir sang it that night. 1. Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin Mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace 2. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia! Christ the Savior is born! Christ the Savior is born! 3. Silent night, holy night Son of God, oh, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord at Thy birth Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
