NWA 10514 2,703 Grams This large, polished, half end cut of NWA 10514 is a remarkable eucrite found in Northwest Africa in 2015. Eucrites are achondrites (“without chondrules”) and are basalt — also known as cooled igneous rock, or lava — that originated on asteroid Vesta. If you look images of Vesta you will see that it is a diverse world and, much like Earth’s moon, it has large exposed areas of ancient, cooled lava. On the moon these dark expanses are described using word “mare” (the Latin word for “sea”), such as Mare Tranquillitatis where Apollo 11 landed. Eucrites take their name from the greek word “eukritos” meaning “easily distinguished,” and while that relates specifically to the large size of silicate grains within them, they are also easily distinguished because they are typically light in both weight, and often in color. Think of terrestrial pumice and you will have an idea of the weight and consistency of these fascinating pieces of lava from Vesta. Due to their low density and the virtual absence of iron, eucrites are very different in look and feel from the more abundant stone meteorite chondrite family, making them especially difficult to recover and identify in the field. We recommend watching this video in 4K for the best viewing experience. See this and many other superb, authenticated meteorites at Aerolite.org
