If you've never seen an adult with whooping cough, this is what it looks like. I was doing this about 15 times a day for about 6 weeks - the cough has now got less severe and its not waking me at night any more, but I am on day 70 now and I am still coughing and wheezing. I was vaccinated against whooping cough as a child and as a student nurse (30 years ago) I cared for infants with whooping cough and didnt catch it then - so presumably my immunity has been lost over time. It started with a barking cough then 2 weeks later I woke suddenly in the middle of the night coughing then couldnt breath in at all - lasted about 30 seconds. This doesnt sound too bad until you realise that once you have coughed there is no usable air in your lungs and effectively it feels like you're suffocating. This is followed by wheezing and sucking air into your stomach instead of your lungs (hence the vomitting and burping). The episodes had hours between them (making it difficult to get on video) so I never knew when it was going to happen next, but its very useful to film it so the doctor can see it - otherwise they might take some convincing its whooping cough ! Adults dont normally get the same 'whoop' after the coughing as children as their airways are different. I cant wait for this to be over and if you are just starting with this - good luck, many people get milder symptoms and I hope you recover soon. They used to call it the 100 day cough so I have another month to go yet :o(
