In a hair-raising incident, witnessed by scores and captured live on many cameras, a 200 kg white tiger mauled and killed a youth after he fell into the animals moat in the Delhi zoo, eyewitnesses and officials said on Tuesday. The white tiger attacked and killed the student after he climbed over the railings of the tiger enclosure and into the moat. The man in his twenties, named only as Maqsood, was said to be under the influence of alcohol when he was mauled by the tiger at about one thirty PM this afternoon. Witnesses said visitors to New Delhi Zoo thew stones in a desperate attempt to deter the rare animal, after Maqsood found himself in the tiger enclosure, and while witnesses said the student fell into the enclosure, zoo manager Riaz Khan believed he leapt over the railing. Footages showed the tiger glowering face to face at the man, as it initially appeared to be surprised on seeing the sudden human intrusion into its habitat. "As soon as the youth fell into the moat, the tiger approached him and silently watched him for nearly 15 minutes," Bittoo, an eyewitness, who recorded the entire incident on his mobile, told media persons. He said what possibly provoked the tiger to attack the man was when onlookers and a guard tried to divert its attention by pelting stones at it. A witness said, I ran to the tiger enclosure, where we saw that a white tiger had caught the student by his neck and he was writhing in pain. Some children threw small sticks and stones at the tiger. Shocking images of the attack show the student with his back to the wall of the enclosure as the tiger approaches. Despite police arriving very quickly, they were unable to save the student.
