Isabel Rubio, MD, PhD, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, discusses the importance of innovation and education in breast cancer surgery at the ESSO 43 congress. She highlights the effectiveness of intraoperative ultrasound as a technique that enhances surgical precision by improving negative margins. This tool not only leads to better oncological outcomes but also enhances patients' quality of life. Dr Rubio emphasizes that while there are various devices available, each breast surgeon must consider tumor and patient characteristics, as well as available resources. Intraoperative ultrasound is particularly beneficial, being both cost-effective and accessible for use in low- and middle-income countries.
