The city of Plymouth and the town of Torpoint are separated by the River Tamar which, for most of its length, defines the boundary between Devon to the east and Cornwall to the west. The town of Torpoint grew as a planned settlement in the 18th century in response to demand for housing close to Plymouth Royal Dockyard, or HMNB Devonport as it is known today. The first regular ferry service started in 1791, where ships were either rowed or sailed across. Then, in the 1830s, engineer James Meadows Rendel introduced a steam-powered chain ferry crossing, sometimes referred to as a floating bridge. This is where the boat is guided across the river by chains secured on both banks. To this day, regular ferry services operate between Torpoint and the Devonport suburb of Plymouth. A toll applies to motor vehicles, but for pedestrians and cyclists it is free to use. This video demonstrates a crossing in real time, taking just over five minutes. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
