The early 1960s saw one of the UK's biggest political bombshells: the Profumo scandal. John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War, was caught having an affair with Christine Keeler, a 19-year-old model who was also involved with Yevgeny Ivanov, a Soviet spy, sparking fears of Cold War espionage. When the scandal blew up in 1963, Profumo lied to Parliament about the affair but later confessed and resigned in disgrace. This scandal rocked Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's Conservative government, contributing to its downfall in the 1964 election. The Profumo affair was a sensational mix of politics, sex, and spying, grabbing headlines and captivating the public. It remains one of Britain's most infamous political scandals. It has come to light that the late Prince Philip, father to King Charles and husband to the late Queen Elizabeth II has been named in the Profumo documents. Kevin O'Sullivan speaks with literary agent, Andrew Lownie about the possible implications this could have for the royal family. #news #politics #royalfamily #royal #queenelizabeth
