Many critical New Testament scholars argue that because the Gospel authors rearranged material, summarized teachings, or adapted language for their audiences, we cannot trust the words attributed to Jesus. According to this view, unless we possess Jesus’ exact spoken words (ipsissima verba), we cannot know what he truly taught. But that assumption doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. In this video, we explore the important New Testament studies discussion of ipsissima verba (“the very words”) vs. ipsissima vox (“the very voice”). Do we need the verbatim words of Jesus to know what he taught? Or can historically reliable summaries faithfully communicate his message? In this video we examine: • Why summarizing speech does not automatically undermine historical accuracy • Evidence that the Gospel writers were committed to preserving truth • Why embarrassing details about the disciples and women witnesses matter historically • Why controversial early church debates (like circumcision and tongues) were never inserted into Jesus’ mouth • Differences between the Sermon on the Mount and Sermon on the Plain • Variations in the baptism accounts of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels • Why the Gospel of John sounds stylistically different from the Synoptics • How contextualization works in ancient historical writing Finally, we’ll see why the four-fold Gospel tradition actually strengthens our understanding of Jesus’ teaching. Instead of weakening the historical case, multiple accounts give us a richer picture of the voice—and often the very words—of Jesus.
