Addiction Recovery Fireside - Bob and Paula Paulson

Bob and Paula both grew up in Utah. They were high school sweethearts, dating off and on from the age of 16 until they married in their early twenties. The marriage began well but soon became troubled as Bob's alcohol addiction became apparent and then progressed. Bob began drinking at age 14 and alcohol and other drugs quickly became his way of coping with life's struggles. As the addiction worsened, life at home and the marriage deteriorated. Bob made attempts for years to quit drinking but nothing ever seemed to stick. Finally, a breaking point was reached. On March 9, 2004, Paula delivered an ultimatum to Bob. He agreed to seek inpatient treatment after which he began to participate in Alcoholics Anonymous. Bob's heart was touched during treatment and his spiritual awakening began. He came to recognize he could not fight this battle alone and he didn't have to. He came to know, understand and apply Christ's atonement in his life. God became his companion and after years and years of investigating, Bob joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Now he serves as a missionary for the 12-step Addiction Recovery Program and shares his testimony with everyone he can. He spends time everyday mentoring others who are struggling with addiction. Bob finds solace in 2 Nephi 33:6 "I glory in plainness; I glory in truth; I glory in Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell."
