I have a question for you today. I'm massively obsessed with online shopping, and I get so excited when my clothes get here. I love the brand new feel to them and the way they look, and I'm really worried that after I wash them I'm going to lose that. So I'll wear them several times before washing them. Is that bad? Dr. Jeff: Well you're not alone, and I have to admit that I like brand new clothes as well, because they have that nice sheen to them, and they're almost always wrinkle-free. But actually yeah it can be bad. Clothing manufacturers achieve that pristine look, that wrinkle-free look by infusing the fabric with chemicals, or spraying them with chemicals, called sizing material. Those chemicals can be very harsh on the skin. They can lead to rashes and breakouts. They can lead to itching. Some of that chemical can also cause irritation of the nasal passages, the lungs, the eyes just from evaporation of that. And I know you don't want to hear this, but I recommend that you launder new clothes right away before you wear them. Also you don't know who's tried those clothes on before. Jennifer: That's quite a scary thought actually. Dr. Jeff: Yes and you don't want a skin infection from someone. Nowadays because of skin infections, some clothing manufacturers actually putting chemicals in their fabrics to prevent bacterial growth, and those chemicals are also very harsh and the skin, and especially when your skin is directly in contact- under the arms, in the elbows, where the creases and folds are of your skin. Those chemicals can concentrate and cause irritation. Jennifer: And does the same apply if you buy in store also? Dr. Jeff: It does, yeah, it's any clothes, online or in store. You really should launder them before you wear them the first time, and hopefully you'll be able to keep them looking fresh and new and wrinkle-free. Jennifer: Wow I shall try my best.
