In this video we go over picking up, securing to the glove, and walking with your bird of prey. This is the 3rd instalment of the How to train a Hawk series. If you are new to falconry or thinking about getting into working with birds of prey, its important that you know how to handle your bird of prey. Knowing how to handle your hawk properly will make training, flying, and just building a relationship with the hawk a lot easier. Before handling and training, you need to know how to pick up a bird of prey from the perch. The first part of this video goes over how to pick up your hawk and train her to step to the glove, even when you have only just got her and she is not used to being on the glove. The second part of the video goes over how to hold your bird of prey. It might seem obvious, but knowing how to hold your hawk in a safe and secure many comes with a few steps to ensure there is no risk of losing her before she is trained. These steps are called the falconry safety positions and like with the knot, can be practised so you know how to handle a bird of prey before she even arrives. In the third part of the video, we go over how to walk with your hawk so that both falconer and hawk are comfortable. Knowing how to walk with your bird of prey is a skill that will be used throughout yours and hers entire time together. All 3 of these steps with practice and patience will be vital when handling your hawk, handling hawks can be frustrating at times but the rewards once you have accomplished a relationship with your hawk through this far outweigh the test of patience it took to get there.
