Sermon: “What Is Biblical Repentance? – The Daily Gift of a New Mind in Christ” Matthew 3:1–12 │ Second Sunday in Advent John the Baptist cries, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” What is true repentance? Not medieval works of penance, and not the modern Protestant version that turns it into a one-time emotional crisis or a human litmus test of visible sorrow. Scripture teaches that repentance is God’s gift: a daily change of mind (metanoia) in which the Holy Spirit turns terrified hearts away from every false trust and toward the forgiveness won by Christ and delivered in Word and Sacrament. The entire Christian life, Luther reminds us, is one of repentance—daily drowning the old serpent’s child in Baptism and daily rising to the new mind that clings to Jesus alone. Advent still thunders in the Baptist’s call: Repent! The Mightier One is here, baptizing you with the Holy Spirit and gathering His wheat into the barn of His Church.
