"True Heart Susie" (Lillian Gish), a shy, plain and simple young country girl, lives with her aunt (Loyola O'Connor) and secretly loves a sincere and naive neighbor boy, William Jenkins (Robert Harron). Susie is an awkward child living in a fantasy world where she imagines that she is loved more than she actually is, but she feels deeply and we feel with her. She believes in Jenkins and her love is so great that she sacrifices the family cow, a pet of hers, and other farm produce for Jenkins' ambitions to attend college, but the benefaction is a secret one without his knowledge, and he finishes his theological studies without suspecting that she aided him. He has impressed her that she must dress as plainly as possible, and she is so attired when she goes with him for a "sody" on his triumphant return from college, but his eyes wander to girls giving a more attractive expression of themselves. Jenkins rises to a position of success and sophistication, and becomes a minister. Then he cruelly consults Susie about the policy of taking a wife, and Susie realizes that she has, through her own efforts, raised him to a level where he is inaccessible to her. Jenkins breaks Susie's heart when he weds a bubbly and superficial "vamp", Bettina "Betty" Hopkins (Clarine Seymour), expecting his bride to adopt herself to his colorless life. The young wife fails to satisfy her husband with her cooking, with Jenkins finds the dishes Susie makes more to his taste. Susie learns to face reality, learns how to look pretty and act gracefully without changing who she is. Jenkins begins to regret his marriage, and so does his wife, who escapes the monotony of her marriage by attending a dance at a neighboring house. After she loses her key and gets caught in the rain on the way home, Betty appeals to Susie, who shields her from the consequences as far as the minister is concerned. However, Betty's fright and her soaking bring on a fatal sickness, and it is after her death that her husband learns of her escapade. Although he swears never to marry again, he finds that Susie has given him the one opportunity of his life, and he returns to her with the offering of his hand in marriage. A 1919 black & white American romantic drama silent film directed by D. W. Griffith, starring Lillian Gish and Robert Harron. They have a chemistry that fills the screen. G.W. Bitzer's camera work is beyond belief, when you consider when it was done. He could create moods with the camera that make you think he was inside the actors thoughts. Gish once remarked that "Virgins are the hardest roles to play. Those dear little girls. To make them interesting takes great vitality, but a fallen woman or a vamp! 75 per cent of your work is already done." Lilian played all three, virgins, vamps and fallen women, and played them well. Here she plays a girl who has nothing extraordinary to distinguish her except her quiet love for Robert, and makes the role interesting and sympathetic. Gish's father was an alcoholic and left the family. Her mother took up acting to support them. Gish and her sister, Dorothy, attended St. Henry's School, where they acted in school plays. The family moved to New York, where the girls became good friends with a next-door neighbor, Gladys Smith. Gladys was a child actress who did some work for director D. W. Griffith, and later took the stage name Mary Pickford. When Lillian and Dorothy were old enough, they joined the theatre. They also took modeling jobs, with Lillian posing for artist Victor Maurel in exchange for voice lessons. In 1912, their friend Mary Pickford introduced the sisters to Griffith and helped get them contracts with Biograph Studios. Lillian Gish soon became one of America's best-loved actresses. She was 19 years old at the time, but told casting directors she was 16. Griffith is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of the motion picture. He pioneered many aspects of film editing, and expanded the art of the narrative film. Together with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks, Griffith founded the studio United Artists in 1919 with the goal of enabling actors and directors to make films on their own terms as opposed to the terms of commercial studios. This film a movie about old fashioned values and the people who held them.was released under Paramount Pictures' prestigious Artcraft label. In 1919 Adolph Zukor devised a three-tiered brand system - the Artcraft division for its high-end, A-list product (ones that could command higher roadshow admissions in major cities) and Realart on the opposite end. The middle tier, which comprised the bulk of the studio's mainstream releases, was the Paramount banner. This quality classification existed for five years. With its beautifully composed pictures, a fluid story, and fine acting, this forgotten gem was Queen Alexandra's favorite film. A print of the film survives in the film archive of the British Film Institute.
