In this nostalgic video, we take a trip back to 1940s South Lyon, Michigan, through the lens of a local production of Rip Comes to Town based on the story of Rip Van Winkle. Originally filmed on 8mm and now transferred to video, the narration recounts memories of the production, community involvement, and the town’s iconic figures and businesses from the time. From the Methodist Church where the film premiered to local shops like the Rexall drugstore and Whipple’s barbershop, this film captures a snapshot of a small town and its people during a simpler time. You'll hear about beloved locals like Roy Smith, the president of the bank, and Bert Roberts, the dentist, as well as scenes of local businesses, from barber shops to hardware stores. Through these scenes and memories, the video provides a unique glimpse into the history and charm of South Lyon and the people who brought this community project to life. This video was originally distributed via DVD by the South Lyon Historical Society. I enhanced the audio and video quality. South Lyon, MI in 1940 starring Esther Hanna.
