A sit down with Mr. Alwyn George, also known as The Mighty Wonderer and Mr. Pony. He was the winner of the 1965 Grenada Road March. He was also steel band organizer and community builder in the La Digue Area. He was involved in many live bands and the bulk of his calypso performances would have been before my time. But my best memory of Mr. Pony is of him creating a steel band in Bellevue Land’s Waterfall Road. The pan yard was in the yard of Mr & Mrs Jackson’s shop, and it brought pan players and and music enthusiasts from as far away as Grenville, Munich and St. George’s parish to our little village. Every Friday night the village was electrified as the boys tittled the tenors in the pan yard. Amongst the many community events that Mr. Alwyn George (The Mighty Wonderer) would have organized in my time, All-fours matches, mass and carolling bands and and so on; I will forever remember and thank him for sweetening the twilights at Waterfall Road with his band, the Third World Trendsetters. Mr. Pony and his band brought many people and a new cultural infusion into the village during the 1970’s.
