Musa Ensete Ventricosum Maurelii Care Guide and Species Spotlight - Red Banana ~ Abyssinian Banana

Today I want to talk about the fabulous Musa Ensete Maurelii commonly known as enset or ensete, Ethiopian banana, Abyssinian banana, pseudo-banana or false banana – Ensete isn’t technically a Banana but is a herbaceous species of flowering plant in the banana family. Get Your own Red banana on eBay here: https://geni.us/EnseteMaurelii Ensete Maurelii – isn’t technically a Banana but it is a member of the Banana family. In their native habitat of Africa, in high rainfall tropical arias like South Africa, Mozambique, Uganda, Congo these plants will grow very big and very tall 20 feet plus! But their fruit is inedible so locals will use the roots and pulp to make food. The domesticated cultivar that you can buy in Europe and North America will not grow as big unless you plant it in the ground and live in a similar high rainfall, tropical or sub-tropical environment in which case make sure you have plenty of room in your garden! So can you grow them in your garden in the UK and Europe? Yes, you can, but they aren’t frost hardy so for us in the UK and the parts of Europe and North America that get cold winters they will need to be brought in from October until Spring time when the risk of frost has passed. That could be a garden shed, or garage, it doesn’t need to be inside your house, just somewhere that is protected from the frost. Cool and dark is actually a good place for them to slow right down and go semi-dormant over winter. So do they make good houseplants? Well, I have seen the Musa Basjoo sold in houseplant shops so they are certainly sold as such, so I suppose the answer is yes, do I think they will make good houseplants? Well looks wise they are stunning but whether they will stay healthy inside is debatable, I think it will be too dry for them, they are really a tropical species and I would imagine they will dry out and get quite brown leaves as a result, now if you have a humidifier on all day with a load of other similar plants that would probably work, or a sunny conservatory with a humidifier on then yes they will probably do well in there. But in a low light bedroom or living room without additional humidification – I think it will just get weaker and browner over time. I saw these and just had to have them, I thought they would make a great tropical backdrop for my videos in the potting shed, I can keep the humidity up in here as we have windows back and front that gets the sun in the morning this side and all afternoon this side and it gets very warm in here over the summer periods so let’s see how they go, I may plat them outside next year if I can overwinter them successfully. So what are the ideal growing conditions for Musa Ensete Maurelii? As mentioned humidity is important, a good amount of water – they can’t be left to dry out but also not too much tap water if you have to let it sit for 24 hours, but rainwater or de-ionised water will be much better to avoid the chlorines and calcium that’s in a lot of tap water. These plants will grow big in the right conditions so will be hungry too, lots of organic matter in the soil so garden compost, well-rotted animal manure, you can feed them regularly and they will thank you for it, use organic feed, seaweed-based, animal-based or if you are growing it in the ground it will get a lot of its nutrients from the soil so just a god mulch or animal manure or chicken pellets around the base will be fine, the watering will take the nutrients down with it to the roots. And lastly plenty of sun, always think of their natural habitat, in this case tropical Africa so lots of sun, heavy rain at times and then full sun again which makes a humid lush fast growing environment.
