Proliferative sickle cell retinopathy (PSR) is a serious eye complication of sickle cell disease (SCD) characterized by the growth of new blood vessels in the retina, often in the peripheral areas. These new vessels are fragile and can bleed easily, leading to vitreous haemorrhage and, in severe cases, retinal detachment, which can cause vision loss or blindness. Sickle cell disease causes blood vessels to narrow and block, leading to a lack of oxygen in the retina (ischemia). In response to the lack of oxygen, the retina releases growth factors that stimulate the formation of new blood vessels. These new blood vessels often form intricate networks that resemble a sea fan, a characteristic feature of sickle cell retinopathy. The newly formed blood vessels are thin and easily bleed, leading to vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment. Disclaimer: This video is only for education.
