Behind the lyrics: Tar & Honey is about our journey through pain, how we move through it and ultimately recovery from past traumas. The central theme is gaslighting; “Sleeping triggers wake again Gaslit echoes of tar and honey slipping down my throat” It’s the idea of being told something is safe and sweet, when it is actually poison to you. I’m sure we can all relate to this happening in some way. “Pain can't dissipate It just gets passed on Person to person, generation to generation And now it's out burden" But when we go through these things, we can start to acknowledge how pain works, and make an effort to understand it better as a universal problem, that suffering can be learnt through conditioning. So ultimately this song is about harnessing that knowledge to heal: “I became intimate with my fear Befriended dread serves me Now life whispers hope into my ears Now I shiver and follow it's gentle signs” That’s what Tar & Honey is all about :) I wrote it to help me set my head straight after a tough time in my life, and hopefully it can do the same for others too.
