Though government data says consumer prices have remained stable in the past four months most Koreans say the numbers don't match the reality of making ends meet. Our economics correspondent Kim Han-ul reports on new measures to tame soaring prices. Three government ministries and a state-run think tank announced detailed measures to stabilize consumer prices on Friday. The Ministry of Strategy and Finance says it plans to foster cooperatives in order to lower fresh produce prices and service fees and drive prices down. The ministry says the co-ops can help bring prices down in two ways. Consumers can purchase goods for less when buying from a co-op, and producers can sell their goods at lower prices through co-ops by eliminating the unnecessary costs that come from distribution chains. The ministry plans to strengthen ties with existing cooperatives and encourage the public to take advantage of this system by making more information available online. Meanwhile, the education ministry says it plans to stabilize the tuition for private kindergarten through government subsidies and stronger regulations on fee hikes. In the short run, the ministry wants to investigate private kindergartens with high fees; in the long-run it will push for new legislation to regulate tuition at the schools. The welfare ministry says it will help to alleviate some of the burden on families raising children by increasing government subsidies for child care services and closely monitoring day care centers to ensure proper allocation of funds. Meanwhile, the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade, a state-run think tank, suggested ways to close price gaps between on- and off-line purchases and said it hopes that e-commerce will help bring prices down in the long-run.
