My ambition for the college is to make it one of the most outstanding colleges in the North East and to make it a fantastic learning experience for both our learners here at East Durham and for our learners at Houghall. The Technical skills academy is new concept for Construction training here at East Durham. The aim is to recreate a professional working environment for the sub-professional construction trades to enable the academy to train and teach construction workers that have the right levels of technical and practical expertise. We want to turn out confident learners that can gain jobs in the construction industry. We have identified with our construction partners the skills and the technical abilities that they require as they move on into the years of 2012/13. We are also looking at emerging industries of renewables and the environmental technologies that will be coming along in the next ten to twenty years. The vision for the technical skills academy is this becomes a real centre of excellence and that employers will clamour to get our learners because they will be the most highly skilled, highly trained and highly sought after learners that they can incorporate into their businesses. [music] All the learners that access the sports academies here at East Durham all take their sports seriously but they actually take their studies seriously too and recognise that there's a fine balance between their sort of professional ambitions with sport and their educational ambitions too. They're all coached by highly trained and highly skilled professional, well-thought of coaches and have an excellent reputation throughout the North East of England. The academy learners have first class facilities and we aim to build on that in the next few years with the addition of Sports Psychology and Sports Nutrition. We also provide professional Physiotherapy services here at East Durham and that's to ensure that all of our sports learners are well looked after and it's so that we can get them back out on the pitch as soon as possible. Once I finish College I'm hoping to go to University and do dance at a higher level and hopefully being in the academy will put us up there with the best dancers. I'd highly recommend it if you're a sporty person and you're up for giving things a go and you're willing to put the time in then I highly recommend this course. [music] STUART WESSELBY: East Durham College's Houghall Campus is a great place to learn and it's a great environment and we have plans to make Houghall to be the leading North East land based College. It can offer learners a great environment to work and learn their trade with some great staff there and great estate. And we hope to build on that over the next three to four years. The tutors are really good. They're there for you if you need any extra support. Most of tutors in this college are quite brilliant at what they do. Each individual skill that they've got helped me in my practice. I think the facilities that we use are really really good and I don't think they could get any better to be honest with you. STUART WESSELBY: The focus at East Durham is to make sure that the courses that we offer actually blend in with what the local employers and employers across the North East want. And our aim here is to make sure we turn out students that have the right skills and the right level of functional maths and english that they can operate in a working environment. People of East Durham deserve an outstanding college and they deserve a college that can raise aspirations and really lift people's own ambitions and it's my aim to make East Durham THE community college of the North East.
