There are two main types of ash handling systems: mechanical ash handling systems and pneumatic ash handling systems. Here, I will explain the working of a mechanical ash handling system: Mechanical Ash Handling System: Ash Collection: After the combustion process, the ash generated from the boiler or furnace is collected in hoppers or ash storage tanks located beneath the combustion chamber. Bottom Ash Handling: The larger and heavier particles, known as bottom ash, settle at the bottom of the ash storage tanks. To handle this ash, a system of conveyors, such as belt conveyors or chain conveyors, is used to transport the bottom ash to a disposal area, such as an ash pond or ash silo. Ash Slurry Disposal: In some cases, the bottom ash may be mixed with water to form an ash slurry. This slurry is then pumped using slurry pumps to a disposal area or to a dewatering system for further treatment. Fly Ash Handling: The finer particles, known as fly ash, are collected using electrostatic precipitators or bag filters. These particles are pneumatically conveyed using an air stream to a storage silo called a fly ash silo. Fly Ash Transportation: From the fly ash silo, the fly ash can be transported for further utilization or disposal. Mechanical conveyors such as screw conveyors or bucket elevators are commonly used to transport the fly ash to trucks, railcars, or other storage facilities. Ash Conditioning: In some cases, the collected ash may require conditioning to improve its handling properties or meet certain environmental regulations. This can involve processes such as mixing the ash with water or adding chemical additives to modify its properties. The mechanical ash handling system operates based on the movement of mechanical components such as conveyors, pumps, and valves. These components work together to transport the ash from the collection points to the storage or disposal areas. It's important to note that the specific design and configuration of a mechanical ash handling system can vary depending on the requirements and constraints of each power plant or industrial facility. Therefore, the working details may differ in different installations, but the fundamental principles of collecting, conveying, and disposing of ash remain consistent. #powerplantengineering #ashhandling #thermalpowerplant #mechanicalhandling #conveyor #pneumatichandling #hydraulichandling #compitativeexams #mechanicalengineering #materialhandling #ashhandlingworking
