Wide of demonstration with banners STORYLINE In an attempt to end two weeks of devastating fighting in Najaf, Shiite militants removed their weapons from the Imam Ali shrine where they have sought refuge - and offered to turn over the keys to top religious leaders . But by late Friday, the fighters loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr were still in control of the mosque. The apparent decision to vacate the shrine came as a surprise, just a day after the militants rejected an ultimatum by the US-installed Iraqi leadership to withdraw or face a massive raid into the walled compound. A peaceful pullout - mediated by religious authorities - offered both the insurgents and the government a face-saving way out of the dangerous crisis. An aide to Iraq's top Shiite cleric said on Friday that he would take control of the Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf if militants currently holding it departed and handed his office the keys. But aide Sheikh Hamed Khafaf told The Associated Press that up until Friday evening, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani had not received them. The current round of violence has spread to other Shiite communities throughout Iraq, killed scores of civilians and wounded hundreds more.
