This is the differences in earlier GM heads with the "SOFT" unhardened exhaust seats an the effects of not being hardned vs the later more modern Gm heads with factory flame induction hardened seats. Almost every earlier pre early 70s cylinder heads are like this that i have seen. This is just to help those of you out there looking to buy earlier cylinder heads watch out for the seats being "SUNK" EARLIER CYLINDER HEADS are much better an better castings an flow better an less likely to crack but lact hardened seats.
