Very excited about this. The question of "what does JPEG compression sound like" has been floating around in my head for a while now, and this weekend I finally got around to doing it. The JPEG compression was my focus, but eventually I realized hey, if I'm reversing the process of image-to-audio+effects-to-image databending, I might as well apply visual effects to the audio at the same time! I've realized since starting writing this description that databending is a pretty general term. I've always just thought of it as a way of manipulating images with audio effects, but it isn't restricted to any one medium or method. As such, I had originally titled this video "reverse databending", but that's a bit of a misnomer. I also refer to databending as an image manipulation-specific term in the video, so excuse that. This is kind of an honorary entry into my glitch sound design technique series, especially given that the next episode will be dealing with more stuff along these lines, working with somewhat more "alternative" modes of creating glitch sounds. As I was looking through databending-related videos to post in the description here, I discovered that Simon Hutchinson has shown manipulating audio in image processing software - in a video I've seen before! (I love his databending series, it has inspired me!) I guess I just never thought about the technique much until recently for some reason, once I started wanting to hear JPEG compression. I'll definitely have to try doing it with an MP3 (or other audio file types) now though, it has made me curious about what effect it might have. I was already going to mention the series in the next glitch sound design techniques video because I'm going to work with editing audio in a hex editor, which I learned from the series, but I'll mention it here too, definitely check it out! also this makes me curious about what MP3 compression would look like on an image. i'll have to try it out Simon Hutchinson's databending series: • Databending and Datamoshing Audio | Simon ...
