In 1975 the International Federation of Women’s Hockey Associations (IFWHA) held its conference in the Scottish capital city of Edinburgh. Alongside this there was hosted a tournament for all participating nations. This was a type of World Championship and was a precursor to what is now the World Cup. The first event was in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1930 and the last in Vancouver, USA, in 1979. Several different countries competed over the years, seeing a variety of different rule changes and evolutions to the game of field hockey. 22 teams competed in 1975 with England beating Wales in the final, and New Zealand getting over the top of the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to take the bronze medal. As winners the English were presented with the Royal Bank of Scotland Quaich, a trophy named after by the sponsors. Scotland finished ninth. The championship was played with new rules, the push-in instead of the roll in, two only for off side, defending forwards at corners on the half way line, and the penalty stroke instead of the penalty bully. The first and final games were played at the Meadowbank pitch. All of the others were played at Peffermill Playing Fields, owned by the University of Edinburgh. Over the last weekend of July, 2025 Scottish Hockey hosted the French ladies hockey team in an official test series. On Saturday the 26th of July, the national governing body, alongside Scottish Hockey Heritage, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Edinburgh IFWHA World Championship. Here several members of the Scottish ladies team, the organising committee, Scottish Hockey and the Scottish Hockey Heritage group gathered to celebrate and to mark the passing of five decades since the event.
