Latest immigration sweep in Brickfields nets 100 illegals

Another 370 foreigners believed to be immigrants were inspected and more than 100 were detained in a joint operation organised by the Malaysian Immigration Department in Brickfields today. The raids were carried out in at least 30 shophouses and business premises near Jalan Thamby Abdullah at 1pm earlier. It was jointly carried out by 207 Immigration Department officers, 11 from the National Registration Department and six others from the Civil Defence Force to weed out illegal immigrants. Malaysian Immigration Deputy Director (Operations) Jafri Embok Taha says the operation is part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal immigrants, as well as a response to complaints the department had received. Local residents had complained about the influx of foreigners with poor hygiene practices.
