It took five separate attempts to record the song "Oncoming Day"; this particular live version occurring between the second and third attempt. As you can hear Martin Phillipps announce in the introduction, "...[it] will be our next single, if we can record it and do it justice". The first version was recorded and filmed at Mayfair Theater in South Dunedin circa October 1982 by cameraman Peter Janes. The second version was recorded at Mascot Studios, Auckland in March 1985, was subsequently scrapped due to "bad moods in the studio", however it did find limited release on a free flexidisk released by the Bucketful Of Brains fanzine in 1987, and is also available on Disk Two of the compilation Secret Box, released in 2000. The third version was recorded during the "I Love My Leather Jacket" sessions at Point Studios, London in December 1985 (with a different drummer other that Alan Haig to tackle the difficult drum beat), and the fourth was recorded during the June - July 1987 "Brave Words" album sessions, again recorded at Point Studios in London. Like the December 1985 version, this version was scrapped too, however is available on the "Ice Picks" bonus disk of the "Heavenly Pop Hits" best of compilation released in 1994. The fifth and final version was recorded at Jacobs Studios in Farnham, Surrey, England in late 1989 and was released on the Submarine Bells album on Flying Nun records in 1990. This concert was filmed by Bob Sutton on a Panasonic video camera, the same video camera that was used to film the Doublehappys "Needles and Plastic" video the following month. It was digitised from the original master tape in December 2010. Eight seconds of footage from this particular performance appears on the 2002 "Heavenly Pop Hits" documentary screened in New Zealand, albeit in much poorer quality than presented here. The Chills lineup at this point was Martin Phillipps (guitars/vocals), Terry Moore (bass/vocals), Peter Allison (keyboards/vocals) and Alan Haig (drums).
