Bangladeshi Defence Ministry has approved the procurement of the Chinese SY-400 ballistic missile system, which is reported to play a key role in the Goal 2030 modernisation plan. The South Asian state has long been a leading client for Chinese armaments, and has recently expanded procurements. Plans are widely reported to currently be under consideration to acquire J-10C and JF-17 Block III ‘4+ generation’ fighters to replace the ageing fleet of MiG-29s and J-7s. In August a modernised variant of the VT-4 main battle tank integrating the new GL-5 hard-kill active protection system for the first time appeared in Bangladesh Army camouflage, fuelling speculation that a contract for the sale of the vehicles had been signed. The standing of Chinese armaments have improved considerably in all areas of the country’s defence sector, allowing them to compete at high levels in foreign markets and significantly expand their international footprints. The sale of L-15 fighters to the United Arab Emirates, and J-10C fighters to Indonesia have been notable landmarks in the last five years. The SY-400 will significantly expand the Bangladesh Army’s long range strike capabilities. The system’s BP-12A missiles have 400 kilometre engagement ranges, and use inertial and satellite guidance to achieve high precision. The system can also be configured to carry eight 400mm guided rockets with 180 kilometre ranges, thus serving as both a rocket artillery and a ballistic missile system in much the same way as the American ATACMS. The importance of high precision ballistic missile systems has been increasingly widely recognised due to their significant role in the Russian-Ukrainain War, primarily ATACMS operated by the Ukrainain Army, and Iskander-M and KN-23B systems operated by the Russian Army. These high impact assets have proven capable of neutralising very high value targets, ranging from personnel concentrations to trains, fighter planes, and mobile air defence systems, with demand from both sides leading the Russian and U.S. defence sectors to seek to significantly increase production.
