Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins | Proathlos Athlete of the Week

This week’s Proathlos Athlete of the Week goes to Christian Yelich. Yelich was this year’s Silver Slugger Award recipient and 2014’s Gold Glove Award winner in the Major Baseball League. Christian Yelich is a professional baseball left fielder, drafted by the Miami Marlins. Yelich is a Thousand Oaks native and attended Westlake High School. In high school Yelich was offered a scholarship to play at on the Miami Hurricans baseball team but was drafted by the Miami Marlins 23rd overall in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. He agreed to a $1.7 million signing bonus on August 27th. In 2011 & 2012 Yelich was named the Marlins’ Minor League Player of the Year. Then on July 23rd, 2013 Yelich was promoted to the major leagues and had a fantastic 2014 season with the Miami Marlins, batting .284 with 21 steals. Yelich continues to have a successful career in baseball. In 2014 he won a Gold Glove Award in left field, becoming the franchise’s youngest ever player and first outfielder to win the award. During that season, Yelich set a franchise record for fielding percentage in left field, at .996. This year (2016) he bat third and managed to increase his power output. On April 23rd he tied a franchise record against the San Francisco Giants, by hitting three doubles. He was also awarded the Silver Slugger Award for 2016.
