With Light, Toward the Light: A Historic concert with the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia in Beirut. In the midst of the challenging times we are all navigating, moments of beauty and unity feel more precious than ever. It is with deep gratitude that we reflect on an extraordinary evening that reminded us of the enduring power of art to uplift, connect, and inspire. On Friday, February 27, the AUB Concert Hall in Beirut witnessed one of the most magical musical evenings Lebanese audiences have experienced in decades. Titled “With Light, Toward the Light,” the concert was far more than a performance—it was a luminous encounter between artistry and identity, memory and hope. It was a night when music felt sacred, when every note carried emotion, and when art transcended the stage to elevate the soul. After 27 years of absence, the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia returned to Lebanon, gathering more than 750 members of the Armenian community and Lebanese music lovers under one roof at the AUB Concert Hall. Their presence alone carried historical and emotional significance, reaffirming the deep-rooted cultural ties between Lebanon and Armenia—ties shaped by over a century of shared history and artistic exchange. Under the inspired direction of British-Armenian maestro and tenor Sipan Olah over three years, the orchestra delivered a performance of exceptional refinement and emotional depth. Joining him were the radiant Lebanese-Armenian soprano Shoghig Torossian and the brilliant British-Armenian pianist Maria Palazian. Longtime collaborators and friends, the three soloists have shared stages in London and Beirut for many years, and their artistic chemistry was unmistakable. Together with the orchestra, they created an atmosphere that was both majestic and intimate—an unforgettable communion of sound and spirit. The Lebanon tour, which ran from February 26 to March 1, was held at the invitation and under the organisation of Hamazkayin’s Lebanon Regional Committee, and was organised through a joint initiative of the National Centre of Chamber Music and KCCA (Klingen Choir and Cultural Association, London). The event was held with the blessing of the three Lebanese-Armenian denominational leaders and through the generosity of the Bezikian family, in collaboration with the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport. Such collective effort reflected a shared vision: to bring artistic excellence and cultural pride back to the Lebanese stage. The carefully curated program, crafted by Maestro Sipan Olah, blended Armenian and international repertoire with elegance and purpose. The orchestra performed E. Mirzoyan’s “Festive Waltz,” R. Amirkhanyan’s “Men soundtracks”, and A. Babajanian’s lyrical “Nocturne” with Maria Palazian at the piano. Highlights also included the Adagio from “Spartacus” and the Waltz from “Masquerade” by A. Khachaturian, works that shimmered with emotional intensity. Operatic brilliance followed, as Shoghig Torossian and Sipan Olah performed arias by Arditi, Lehár, Tigranyan, Puccini, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Jerome Kern, alongside romances by Saryan, Ales, Alabiev, and Aznavour. Patriotic and lyrical songs such as K. Petrosyan’s “Armenia” and A. Ayvazian’s “Yerevan” transported the audience spiritually to the homeland, stirring both pride and nostalgia. The evening culminated in powerful duets, including Lehár’s “Lippen Schweigen,” Aznavour’s “For You Armenia,” and Hovhannisyan’s “Yerevan–Erebuni.” The blending of the two enchanting voices with the orchestra’s harmonies and the piano’s rich chords held the audience in heightened emotion. The concert concluded with Gabriel Erinyan’s beloved “Cilikia,” performed by the soloists and orchestra together with a standing audience of more than 750 voices—a breathtaking moment of unity and collective hope. Before the final applause, Hamazkayin Lebanon honored Mr. Aleco Bezikian with a Certificate of Gratitude for his vision and dedication to Armenian arts and music. The concert was also dedicated to the cherished memory of his wife, Anie Bezikian—a tribute that added a deeply personal dimension to the evening. The event was attended by Members of Parliament, representatives of Lebanon’s Ministry of Culture, diplomats from the United States, Finland, and Armenia, clergy from various churches, and prominent figures from political, cultural, and regional organizations. The concert was fully recorded by MTV Lebanon and will be broadcast to millions, further promoting Armenian classical music and the artistry of the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia. In the days following the performance, the orchestra received numerous invitations and proposals for future collaborations in Lebanon and abroad—clear evidence that the impact of this night extends far beyond a single concert hall. This evening reminded us that art has the power to bring us together when we need it most.
