Dr. Vinay Mahendra, Senior Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic & Robotic Urological Surgeon and Renal Transplant Surgeon at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata has been performing robotic donor nephrectomies for nearly seven years.  He compares laparoscopic donor nephrectomies to robotic, both with published literature and personal experience.   According to one study he cites, robotic has proven to be beneficial (for donors) with decreased morbidity and average hospital stays of one less day than laparoscopic kidney donors.  He reveals research about the number of cases required to successfully accomplish the learning curve for laparoscopic donor nephrectomies was high, even in  high volume centers.  Dr. Mahendra then shows results of 150 of his own patients to the Robotic Surgeons Council of India.
