Nacha Guevara sings Mario Benedetti's poem 'A Latin American Our Father', or rather 'A Latin American Lord's Prayer', with music by Alberto Favero. Mario Benedetti (1920–2009) was a Uruguayan writer and one of the most widely read and loved voices in Latin American literature. Born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay, he lived through many of the major political and social upheavals of the 20th century, experiences that deeply shaped his writing. Benedetti worked across many genres—poetry, short stories, novels, essays, and journalism—but he is especially known for his poetry, which speaks in a clear, direct language about everyday life, love, injustice, hope, and political commitment. His work often feels intimate and personal, yet it addresses collective struggles shared by many in Latin America and beyond. Benedetti’s writing stands out for its accessibility and emotional honesty. Rather than using complex or highly experimental language, he favoured a conversational style that allowed readers from many backgrounds to recognize themselves in his words. Themes such as exile, dictatorship, social inequality, and resistance appear frequently, particularly after he was forced into exile during Uruguay’s military dictatorship in the 1970s. At the same time, his poems and stories about love, friendship, and human vulnerability have made him popular far beyond political or academic circles. Today, Mario Benedetti remains an essential figure for understanding both Latin American literature and the power of literature to connect deeply with everyday human experience. 'Un Padrenuestro latinoamericano' was written as part of his poetic output from the late 1950s to early 1960s, and it appears in his collection "Poemas del hoyporhoy", which comprises poems written roughly between 1958 and 1961. Nacha Guevara (born 1940) is an Argentine singer, actress, and cultural figure whose career has spanned music, theatre, television, and political activism. She emerged in the 1960s as part of a new generation of Latin American artists who blended art with social and political engagement. Trained in theatre and music, Guevara quickly became known for her powerful stage presence and her willingness to challenge conventions, using performance as a way to question authority, injustice, and traditional norms. Her work often combines song, dramatic interpretation, and poetry, making her performances both emotionally intense and intellectually provocative. Guevara’s career has been deeply shaped by Argentina’s political history. During the military dictatorship of the 1970s, she was forced into exile because of her outspoken views, living and performing abroad for several years. This experience of exile became a central theme in her artistic expression, adding depth and urgency to her work. After returning to Argentina, she continued to perform and create, becoming a symbol of artistic resistance and resilience. Today, Nacha Guevara is recognized not only as a versatile performer but also as a cultural voice who has used art to reflect on memory, freedom, and the enduring impact of political and personal struggle. The track was recorded in 1978 at the Teatro Hubert de Blanck in La Habana, Cuba. The poem has been freely translated by Pablo Pakula. #latinamerica #poetry #poem #politics #song #politicalpoetry #mariobenedetti #nachaguevara #latinoamerica #poesia #poesía #poemas #politica #política #padrenuestro #ourfatherprayer #ourfather #lordsprayer
