North Korea unveiled the Tianma-2, an upgraded version of its locally produced Cheonma-2 main battle tank, at a defence exhibition in Pyongyang. Tianma-2 has remarkable similarities with the German Leopard 2A7-2A8. It exhibits a design very similar to modern Western and US main battle tanks. The layout features a front left driver's position, a turret located in the centre and a rear-mounted power pack. The tank is operated by a three-man crew supported by an automatic loading system for its primary armament, a 125-millimetre smoothbore gun. The turret design now integrates modular composite armour, providing enhanced protection against kinetic energy projectiles and shaped charges. The modular construction allows for rapid field replacement of damaged armour sections, a feature of many advanced main battle tanks. In addition, Explosive Reactive Armour covers the front and sides of the hull, while wireframe armour is attached to the rear to defend against rocket-propelled grenades and other shaped charge threats. One of the most notable updates is the integration of the Active Protection System, which bears similarities to the Trophy APS from Israel and its European counterparts. The active protection system on the Tianma-2 includes radar sensors on both sides of the turret for threat detection and countermeasures designed to intercept incoming anti-tank missiles and projectiles. A counter-drone anti-tank launch system is also included to further strengthen the tank's defences. The upgraded turret also includes a remote-controlled weapon station equipped with a 12.7 millimetre heavy machine gun and launchers capable of firing anti-tank guided missiles. The tank has a panoramic vision system for battlefield awareness and engagement for the commander and gunner.
