Engineering higher education is inherently vocational, with degree programmes in engineering constituting professional training for the majority of graduates to progress in to professional engineering careers. Nevertheless, for decades, industry has reported a graduate skills gap, highlighting a range of ways in which they perceive graduates to be ill-prepared for the challenges they face in their early careers (see, for example, IET, 2019 and previous year’s reports; Royal Academy of Engineering, 2007, 2010). In this fourth webinar of the “Engineering Graduates for Industry” series, we will be looking at the engineering skills gap from the perspective of Educators. We will explore this challenge and ask what, when armed with a variety of academic tools, educators can do to help students, industry partners and graduates prepare for success in their post-graduate careers. We will consider the roles that students, universities, educators, industry, and recruiters need to play in building the professional capabilities of students, and also consider what expectations each of these stakeholder groups can reasonably have of the others.
