On Sunday 30th November, Greenpeace Australia Pacific activists scaled and locked on to a coal shop for 7 hours, blocking it from entering the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle, NSW. The message was simple - the Australian government must set a timeline to phase out coal and gas. As thousands rallied at Rising Tide’s People’s Blockade, brave activists took action in solidarity with the foltalla, just outside the port. Australia is the world’s third largest fossil fuel exporter and is expanding production faster than any other country. Since the Albanese government came into power in 2022, 32 coal and gas projects have been approved or extended. This is driving the climate crisis, putting communities in Australia and the pacific at risk, and directly conflicts with our global climate commitments. So, alongside the protesters at Rising Tide, we shared a strong message the government couldn’t ignore - the Albanese government must set a timeline for the phase out of all fossil fuels (including exports) and stop approving new coal and gas projects! Because if the government won’t act - THE PEOPLE WILL! When we work together, we have the power to change the system. Your support made this possible. Thank you!
