I've finished my first banjo build! It's made from yellow birch, with oak I salvaged from pallets serving as the centerline, heel and rim cap, peghead plate and wooden tone ring. Rim diameter is about 11 5/8". Strings are the Aquila Nylgut Minstrel 17Bs, and though the strings haven't quite stabilized yet, I thought I'd capture a sound sample from practicing a little fretless. The tuning is Open D for now (relative G tuning). Tuners are ebony friction style violin tuning pegs. Scale is 25.5" Tailpiece is birch with copper wire and leather attachment, bridge is made from walnut, nut is black locust. Fingerboard is richlite. "Stained" using iron acetate I made from steel wool and vinegar, and finished with Tru-oil. I am beyond excited about how it turned out, and I am finding fretless slides to be quite addictive. I think I'll be having a lot of fun with this instrument, and I'm still a little in disbelief that it was a pile of lumber just a few months ago. #blacksheepbanjos
