During late winter here in the south, the wood ducks begin arriving! Time to prepare the wood duck nest box with fresh cedar chips. But first, we'll need to get rid of the massive wasp nest inside. And we can't do that until we prepare the boat to get out to the nest box...which is full of water! A little DIY repair is in order. Plus it's time to prune my beloved Peggy Martin rose. This one is extra special to me, as she survived Hurricane Helene -- and the rose variety itself actually came about originally when the plant survived Hurricane Katrina years ago. The Wood Duck is a cavity nester, which means a properly maintained nesting box can make a real difference in helping them raise a brood. Late winter is the ideal time to clean out your boxes and add a fresh layer of cedar shavings. Cedar provides insulation, helps manage moisture, and creates a soft, stable base to protect the eggs during incubation. Taking care of this now ensures your boxes are ready when nesting season begins in early spring.
